What will I study in this field?
Starting with a background in French, a wide range of graduate programs enable you to focus on French or Francophone Literature and Culture, French linguistics, or teaching French. Francophone Studies address the literature and culture of the French-speaking world outside France (e.g., Sub-Saharan Africa, North Africa, the Caribbean, Québec). You can focus primarily on French or Francophone Studies, or do comparative study between French and any other languages.
What do French specialists do in the Army?
Most serve as Foreign Area Officers (Functional Area 48), as attachés, security assistance officers, staff advisors on military affairs and operations, and liaison officers to foreign militaries. Some will have the opportunity to teach French at USMA.
